M Leuven: Toonmoment Judith Van Oeckel

Het toon­mo­ment van Judith Van Oeckel vormt het sluit­stuk van haar vijf maan­den duren­de resi­den­tie bij M. In haar prak­tijk onder­zoekt ze de span­ning tus­sen dans als leven­de kunst­vorm en de behoef­te om niet-tast­ba­re artis­tie­ke prak­tij­ken te regi­stre­ren, archi­ve­ren en in stand te hou­den — los van de fysie­ke aan­we­zig­heid van het lichaam. Door chro­ni­sche migrai­ne ver­an­der­de Van Oeckels rela­tie tot bewe­ging ingrij­pend. Vanuit haar ach­ter­grond als dan­ser en per­for­man­ce­kun­ste­naar moest ze zich opnieuw ver­hou­den tot de gren­zen en moge­lijk­he­den van haar lichaam. Dit bracht haar ertoe te onder­zoe­ken hoe cho­re­o­gra­fie kan wor­den bewaard zon­der inten­si­teit, kwets­baar­heid en licha­me­lijk­heid te verliezen.

Judith Van Oeckel (°1998) is een dan­ser en kun­ste­naar, geves­tigd in Leuven. Ze stu­deer­de af aan P.A.R.T.S. (2019) en behaal­de haar mas­ter in Vrije Kunsten aan KASK (2022). Haar werk werd onder meer gepre­sen­teerd in Museum Dr. Guislain (Par Hasard, 2023), M Leuven (Playground, 2023), KAAP (Chambres d’O, 2024), 30CC (Young Poets Society, 2024) en Z33 (Modelling Life, 2025). Ze was eer­der resi­dent bij Gouvernement (2023), Jester (2023) en A Two Dogs Company (2025).

Judith Van Oeckel​’s pre­sen­ta­ti­on marks the final part of her five-month resi­d­en­cy at M. In her prac­ti­ce, she explo­res the ten­si­on bet­ween dan­ce as a living art form and the need to record, archi­ve, and main­tain intan­gi­ble artis­tic prac­ti­ces — sepa­ra­te from the phy­si­cal pre­sen­ce of the body. Chronic migrai­nes dra­ma­ti­cally chan­ged Van Oeckel’s rela­ti­ons­hip to move­ment. From her back­ground as a dan­cer and per­for­man­ce artist, she had to re-enga­ge with the limits and pos­si­bi­li­ties of her body. This led her to inves­ti­ga­te how cho­re­o­grap­hy can be pre­ser­ved wit­hout los­ing inten­si­ty, vul­ne­ra­bi­li­ty, and physicality.

Judith Van Oeckel (born 1998) is a dan­cer and artist based in Leuven. She gra­du­a­ted from P.A.R.T.S. (2019) and obtai­ned her Master’s degree in Fine Arts from KASK (2022). Her work has been pre­sen­ted at Museum Dr. Guislain (Par Hasard, 2023), M Leuven (Playground, 2023), KAAP (Chambres d’O, 2024), 30CC (Young Poets Society, 2024) and Z33 (Modelling Life, 2025), among others. She was pre­vious­ly in resi­den­ce at Gouvernement (2023), Jester (2023) and A Two Dogs Company (2025).
