Artist-in-residence at Off the Grid - Deadline 01.06

OTG focu­ses in first instan­ce on visu­al artists, per­for­mers and hybrid prac­ti­ces.

Off the Grid wants to give spa­ce to artist-cen­tred, expe­ri­men­tal and col­la­bo­ra­ti­ve prac­ti­ces, paying spe­ci­al atten­ti­on to new voi­ces and pro­fi­les that have not (yet) been heard or be seen in a muse­um con­text, pre­sen­ta­ti­on insti­tu­ti­ons or the regu­lar arts field. 

The resi­d­en­cy is open for artists based in Belgium or one of its neigh­bou­ring countries.

This call spe­ci­fi­cally focu­ses on prac­ti­ces of wan­de­ring, pathfin­ding and flâ­ne­rie, open­ly explo­ring the ques­ti­on, ​“Who has the free­dom to walk — and whe­re?” This inclu­des the under­stan­ding of public and urban spa­ces as con­sti­tu­ents of one of the few oppor­tu­ni­ties for casu­al, embo­died encoun­ters but also a pla­ce charac­te­ri­sed by sys­te­mic issues, inclu­ding but not limi­ted to dis­cri­mi­na­ti­on, pri­vi­le­ge, poli­cing, clas­sism, sexism, and ableism.

The resi­dent recei­ves seve­r­al forms of tai­lor-made support:

• Throughout their stay at OTG the resi­dent is wel­co­med and sup­por­ted by the resi­d­en­cy coo­r­di­na­tor, in clo­se col­la­bo­ra­ti­on with the rest of Cas-co’s team, gene­ral coo­r­di­na­tor and pro­duc­ti­on coordinator;

• During wee­kly con­ver­sa­ti­ons, the resi­dent can con­sult on a broad spec­trum of artis­tic, cura­to­ri­al, admi­ni­stra­ti­ve, com­mu­ni­ca­ti­ve or pro­duc­ti­o­nal matters;

• The resi­dent is intro­du­ced, sup­por­ted and con­nec­ted to the local artis­tic com­mu­ni­ty, and is given access to net­wor­king oppor­tu­ni­ties, open stu­dios, ope­nings, and so on.

Next to this, the resi­dents can make use of the over­ar­ching sup­port pro­gram­me orga­ni­zed by Cas-co:

• Every month, Cas-co wel­co­mes pro­fes­si­o­nal cura­tors and prac­ti­ti­o­ners to con­duct a Talk & Studio Visit with the residents;

• All resi­dents can par­ti­ci­pa­te in various mas­terclasses and (tech­ni­cal) ini­ti­a­ti­ons in our workshops;

• All artists can visit M Leuven and STUK free of char­ge during the resi­d­en­cy period.

During their resi­d­en­cy, the artist-in-resi­den­ce has acces to seve­r­al loca­ti­ons and faci­li­ties:

• A stu­dio and pre­sen­ta­ti­on spa­ce of 35 m²;

• An adjoin­ting pre­sen­ta­ti­on spa­ce of 120 m², to be used in con­ver­sa­ti­on with the collective-in-residency;

• Shared wor­king spa­ces in Cas-co: a com­mu­nal kit­chen (Off the Plate), cowor­king and pro­jec­ti­on rooms (Off the Shelves) and a work­shop for wood and metal;

• Several maker­spa­ces at maak­leer­plek: our self-run Graphical Lab (inclu­ding riso­graph prin­ters, screen prin­ting tools, an etching press as well as the pho­to stu­dio) and a High Tech Lab, Textile Lab, Tool Library and many more, run by partners.

The pro­gram­me of OTG can branch out from abo­ve men­ti­on­ned spa­ces to the public spa­ce sur­roun­ding Cas-co (e.g. the flag­po­le at Brede School Stroom) and other locations.

OTG does not offer acco­mo­da­ti­on, but can look for opti­ons within the surroundings.

Each artist-in-resi­den­ce has access to a total bud­get of €3.680,– (inclu­si­ve VAT);

• The bud­get inclu­des the artist fee (€1.500,- for the resi­d­en­cy and an opti­o­nal €200 for a talk or masterclass); 

• A pro­duc­ti­on bud­get (€ 1.500,-);

• Off the Grid reim­bur­ses a maxi­mum of €480,- in tra­velling and accom­mo­da­ti­on costs;

Cas-co covers for all the main costs rela­ted to com­mu­ni­ca­ti­on (e.g. pho­to­grap­hy and print) and hos­pi­ta­li­ty (e.g. cate­ring during the ope­ning and volun­teers guar­ding the presentation).

Artists are wel­co­med to sug­gest addi­ti­o­nal sub­si­dies or forms of inco­me, Cas-co will sup­port the appli­ca­ti­ons when possible.

The appli­cant must fill in the appli­ca­ti­on form.

Through the form the can­di­da­tes can sub­mit one PDF (named ​“FirstName_LastName_OTG2025.pdf”), which includes:

• An intro­duc­ti­on of your prac­ti­ce, (maxi­mum 1 page)

• A pro­ject pro­po­sal for your resi­d­en­cy peri­od, (maxi­mum 2 pages)

• A port­fo­lio of rele­vant work, with works no older than 5 years, (maxi­mum 10 pages). 

The appli­ca­ti­ons must be sub­mit­ted via the fol­lo­wing link befo­re mid­night June 1^st 2025.

The appli­ca­ti­ons will be pro­ces­sed by a juries exis­ting of the Cas-co team as well as by one for­mer Off the Grid resi­dent, one cur­rent ate­lier resi­dent, and one part­ner of Cas-co. All can­di­da­tes are asses­sed based on the rele­van­ce of their pro­po­sal in regards to Off the Grid’s pro­gram­me, as well as the prac­ti­cal fea­si­bi­li­ty of the pro­ject. The jury gua­ran­tees fair and equal tre­at­ment of all applications.

The out­co­me of the appli­ca­ti­ons will be com­mu­ni­ca­ted by mid-July.

• Off the Grid richt zich in eer­ste instan­tie op beel­den­de kun­ste­naars, per­for­mers en hybri­de prak­tij­ken;
• Het plat­form wil ruim­te geven aan expe­ri­men­te­le en samen­wer­kings­ge­rich­te prak­tij­ken, met een bij­zon­de­re aan­dacht voor nieu­we stem­men en pro­fie­len die (nog) niet gehoord of gezien zijn bin­nen de muse­a­le con­text, pre­sen­ta­tie-instel­lin­gen of het regu­lie­re kunstenveld;
• De resi­den­ties staan open voor kun­ste­naars die geves­tigd zijn in België of in een van de buur­lan­den;
• Deze oproep richt zich spe­ci­fiek op prak­tij­ken rond dwa­len, het zoe­ken van wegen en flâ­ne­rie — een open ver­ken­ning van de vraag: ​‘Wie mag er wan­de­len, en waar?’ Daarbij wordt de publie­ke en ste­de­lij­ke ruim­te begre­pen als een van de wei­ni­ge plek­ken waar toe­val­li­ge, beli­chaam­de ont­moe­tin­gen moge­lijk zijn, maar tege­lijk ook als een ruim­te die geken­merkt wordt door sys­te­mi­sche pro­ble­men zoals — maar niet beperkt tot — dis­cri­mi­na­tie, pri­vi­le­ge, poli­ti­se­ring, klas­sis­me, sek­sis­me en validisme.

De OTG-resi­dent ont­vangt ver­schil­len­de vor­men van onder­steu­ning op maat:

• Tijdens het ver­blijf bij OTG wordt de resi­dent ver­wel­komd en bege­leid door resi­den­tie­co­ör­di­na­tor, in nau­we samen­wer­king met de rest van het team, de alge­meen coör­di­na­tor en productieverantwoordelijke;

• De resi­dent kan op weke­lijk­se basis in gesprek gaan over een breed sca­la aan artis­tie­ke, cura­tori­ë­le, admi­ni­stra­tie­ve, com­mu­ni­ca­tie­ve of pro­duc­ti­o­ne­le vraagstukken;

• De resi­dent wordt geïn­tro­du­ceerd in, onder­steund door en ver­bon­den met de artis­tie­ke gemeen­schap rond­om Cas-co (kun­ste­naars, part­ners, cul­tuur­wer­kers) en krijgt toe­gang tot net­werk­mo­men­ten, open studio’s, ver­nis­sa­ges, enzovoort.

Daarnaast kun­nen de resi­den­ten gebruik maken van het over­koe­pe­len­de Support-pro­gram­ma van Cas-co:

• Elke maand nodigt Cas-co pro­fes­si­o­ne­le cura­to­ren en kun­ste­naars uit voor een Talk & Studio Visit met de residenten;

• Alle resi­den­ten kun­nen deel­ne­men aan diver­se mas­ter­clas­ses en (tech­ni­sche) ini­ti­a­tie­mo­men­ten in onze werkplaatsen;

• Alle betrok­ken kun­ste­naars krij­gen tij­dens hun resi­den­tie­pe­ri­o­de gra­tis toe­gang tot M Leuven en STUK.

Tijdens de resi­den­tie heeft de artist-in-resi­den­ce toe­gang tot ver­schil­len­de (werk)ruimtes en faci­li­tei­ten:

• Een ate­lier- en pre­sen­ta­tie­ruim­te van 35 m²;µ
• Een aan­gren­zen­de pre­sen­ta­tie­ruim­te van 120 m², te gebrui­ken in gesprek met het collectief-in-residence;
• Gedeelde werk­ruim­tes in Cas-co: een gemeen­schap­pe­lij­ke keu­ken (Off the Plate), cowor­king- en pro­jec­tie­ruim­tes (Off the Shelves) en een werk­plaats voor hout en metaal;
• Verschillende maker­spa­ces op maak­leer­plek: ons zelf-run Grafisch Lab (inclu­sief riso­graaf­prin­ters, zeef­druk­ge­reed­schap­pen, een ets­pers en de foto­stu­dio) en een High Tech Lab, Textiel Lab, Gereedschapsbibliotheek en nog veel meer, gerund door partners.

Het pro­gram­ma kan zich ook uit­brei­den naar de omlig­gen­de publie­ke ruim­te (bij­voor­beeld de monu­men­ta­le vlag­gen­mast op de speel­plaats van Brede School Stroom) of ande­re locaties.

OTG voor­ziet geen accom­mo­da­tie, maar kan wel mee zoe­ken naar opties in de omgeving.

Elke kun­ste­naar-in-resi­den­tie krijgt toe­gang tot een totaal­bud­get van €3.680,- (inclu­sief btw);

• Dit bud­get omvat het kun­ste­naars­loon (€1.500,- voor de resi­den­tie en opti­o­neel €200,- voor een talk of masterclass); 

• een pro­duc­tie­bud­get (€1.500,-);

• Off the Grid voor­ziet in een terug­be­ta­ling van maxi­mum €480,- voor reis- en verblijfskosten;

Cas-co neemt de belang­rijk­ste kos­ten op zich die ver­band hou­den met com­mu­ni­ca­tie (zoals foto­gra­fie, druk­werk) en ont­haal (zoals cate­ring bij de ope­ning en vrij­wil­li­gers voor de publieksbegeleiding).

Kunstenaars wor­den aan­ge­moe­digd om bij­ko­men­de sub­si­dies of vor­men van inkom­sten voor te stel­len; Cas-co onder­steunt deze aan­vra­gen waar mogelijk.

De aan­vra­ger moet het aan­vraag­for­mu­lier invullen.

Geef je port­fo­lio de naam: ​“Voornaam_Achternaam_OTG2025.pdf”

Via het for­mu­lier kun­nen de kan­di­da­ten één PDF indie­nen, die het vol­gen­de bevat:

• Een intro­duc­tie van je prak­tijk (maxi­maal 1 pagina);

• Een pro­ject­voor­stel voor de resi­den­tie­pe­ri­o­de (maxi­maal 2 pagina’s);

• Een port­fo­lio van rele­vant werk, met wer­ken niet ouder dan 5 jaar (maxi­maal 10 pagina’s).

De aan­vra­gen moe­ten wor­den inge­diend via de vol­gen­de link voor mid­der­nacht op 1 juni.

De aan­vra­gen wor­den ver­werkt door een jury bestaan­de uit het team van Cas-co, even­als één voor­ma­li­ge Off the Grid resi­dent, één ate­lier­re­si­dent en één part­ner van Cas-co. Alle kan­di­da­ten wor­den beoor­deeld op basis van de rele­van­tie van hun voor­stel ten opzich­te van het pro­gram­ma van Off the Grid, even­als de prak­ti­sche haal­baar­heid van het pro­ject. De jury garan­deert een eer­lij­ke en gelij­ke behan­de­ling van alle aanvragen.

De uit­slag van de aan­vra­gen wordt medio juli gecommuniceerd.
