Iffy Tillieu

Iffy Tillieu (geb.

Iffy Tillieu (b. 1978, Brussels) is a multidisciplinary artist whose work focuses on themes such as family, homelands, displacement, and the lasting impact of historical power relations on human relationships. From a critical view on dominant aesthetic narratives, she developed a hybrid methodology she calls Eclectic Fetishism”: a method that combines critical research, sensual materiality, and resistance to archiving.

Playfulness plays a central role in this. It functions as an archival ritual — a strategy to make personal and collective histories tangible and palpable. Her work explores how identity, perception, and normative structures (such as colonial legacies or psychiatric frameworks) manifest visually and materially. She does this through media such as textiles, video, and painting.

Abstract art occupies a special place in her practice. Not as a universal visual language, but as a space for ambiguity, layering, and subjectivity. Her abstract visual language is rooted in a marginal position and speaks from a niche rather than from the center. The tension between abstraction and identity forms the core of her research.

As an Afro-European, neurodivergent and queer artist, Iffy works from an idiosyncratic and multiple perspective. Her work emerges from an intense internal process in which intuition, association, and autobiography converge into a unique visual language.

Iffy raises critical questions about the canon of Western modernism and investigates how abstract art practices were often inspired by non-Western cultures without explicitly acknowledging this influence. She places her work within the broader context of Afropean and Afrodiasporic experiences and questions how art is read and positioned within historical power structures.

In projects such as Another Exonym (UPC Kortenberg, 2025) and Black Eclectic Anthropocene (MAEDS, Setúbal, Portugal, 2023), she brings these ideas together. Her work challenges and invites dialogue about art, identity, and the gaze from the outside.
