Elise El Yousfi (2001, Frankrijk) is een kunstenaar gevestigd in Antwerpen. In haar werk onderzoekt ze vooral de relatie tussen sculptuur en poëzie. Deze twee vormen raken met elkaar verweven in multisensorische, scenografische installaties die vragen stellen over identiteit en verbondenheid. Geïnspireerd door haar Marokkaanse en Franse achtergrond, en door haar eigen dromen, zijn deze thema’s nauw verbonden met persoonlijke herinnering en het zelf. El Yousfi werkt met een breed scala aan materialen en ontwikkelt stalen constructies waarin keramiek, as, en kant samenkomen. Deze elementen vormen sculpturale speelvelden die doen denken aan vertrouwde, natuurlijke vormen, en leggen symbolische verbanden tussen object en taal.

Elise El Yousfi (2001, France) is an artist based in Antwerp. Her work primarily explores the relationship between sculpture and poetry. These two forms are entangled to produce multisensory, scenographic installations which investigate ideas about identity and belonging. Drawn from her Moroccan and French heritage, and her own dreams, these themes are closely linked to personal memory and selfhood. El Yousfi works in a range of materials, creating steel structures which include ceramic, ash and lace. These become part of sculptural playgrounds reminiscent of familiar, natural shapes, drawing symbolic connections between objects and language.

Vijf maanden lang is Elise El Yousfi te gast in het M‑residentie in Cas-co. El Yousfi’s praktijk ontvouwt zich op het snijvlak van beeldhouwkunst en poëzie. Door middel van schrijven en tekenen transformeert ze tekst tot sculpturen waarin herinnering, identiteit en vragen rond het volwassen worden met elkaar verweven zijn.
In de beeldhouwkunst vond El Yousfi een manier om haar Marokkaanse en Franse wortels en haar dubbele identiteit verder te verkennen. Met staal, keramiek, organische materialen en kant bouwt ze immersieve structuren in een beeldtaal die zowel intiem als universeel resoneert. In haar werk reflecteert ze op wat het betekent op te groeien terwijl het verleden zich hardnekkig aandient — onopgelost en indringend.
Haar oeuvre wordt gekenmerkt door een terugkerend gebruik van de kleur wit, als verwijzing naar de kwetsbare ruimte tussen herinnering en volwassenheid. Ook de speeltuin keert terug als motief: een plek van troost, ontdekking en spel.
Tijdens haar residentie wil El Yousfi het atelier tot een open, verstilde ontmoetingsruimte transformeren. Ze nodigt bezoekers uit tot gesprek en gedeelde reflectie, en zet de dialoog in als verlengstuk van haar materiaalonderzoek. Vanuit die uitwisseling verdiept ze haar exploratie van ‘witheid’ in uiteenlopende dragers, op zoek naar vormen waarin melancholie, zelfonderzoek en culturele verbondenheid samenkomen.

For five months, Elise El Yousfi is a guest at the M residency in Cas-co. El Yousfi’s practice unfolds at the intersection of sculpture and poetry. Through writing and drawing, she transforms text into sculptures in which memory, identity, and questions surrounding growing up are interwoven.
In sculpture, El Yousfi found a way to further explore her Moroccan and French roots and her dual identity. Using steel, ceramics, organic materials, and lace, she constructs immersive structures within a visual language that resonates both intimately and universally. In her work, she reflects on what it means to grow up while the past persistently presents itself — unresolved and intrusive.
Her oeuvre is characterized by a recurring use of the color white, as a reference to the fragile space between memory and adulthood. The playground also returns as a motif: a place of solace, discovery, and play.
During her residency, El Yousfi aims to transform the studio into an open, serene meeting space. She invites visitors to conversation and shared reflection, employing dialogue as an extension of her material research. Through this exchange, she deepens her exploration of ‘whiteness’ across diverse media, seeking forms where melancholy, self-examination, and cultural connectedness converge.
