Aaliyah Gooding

In her practice, Aaliyah Gooding explores how internal and societal tensions translate into sculptural form. Her work navigates the space between order and disruption, reality and madness, self-perception and the gaze of the other. Her creative process alternates between modeling, casting, and assemblage; while clay allows for movement and intuition, the casting process fixes the form, and the assemblage, in turn, seeks to impose order upon the chaos. In doing so, she brings together elements that are fragile and robust, handmade or found. Driven by a fascination with the ambiguous and the uncanny, her work occupies a tipping point — a place where the boundary between the recognizable and the distorted is in constant flux. Drawing inspiration from cinema, poetry, and art history, she approaches sculpture as a series of fragmented scenes and materialized poems, in which various realities can coexist — side by side and intertwined.
