Ellen Dhondt is vijf maan­den te gast in onze M‑residentie in Cas-co. Gefascineerd door de vorm­ge­ving van edu­ca­tie­ve werk­bla­den en hun onzicht­ba­re dog­ma­ti­sche impact op beeld­vor­ming, ver­kent zij in haar schil­de­rij­en gen­der­rol­len, ste­reo­ty­pe­ring en de con­struc­tie van identiteit.

In een spon­ta­ne, ogen­schijn­lijk onschul­di­ge beeld­taal schept Dhondt een pic­tu­ra­le wereld die haar in staat stelt de vaak geba­na­li­seer­de erva­rin­gen van vrou­wen op de voor­grond te plaat­sen. Geïnspireerd door de uit­knip­ba­re papie­ren pop­pen uit de jaren 1920, cre­ëer­de ze een alter ego: Ellie Dolly. Dit per­so­na­ge wordt in ver­schil­len­de situ­a­ties en omge­vin­gen opge­voerd, waar­bij Dhondt de com­plexe vrou­we­lij­ke iden­ti­teit, uni­ver­se­le the­ma’s en taboes verkent.

Het resul­taat van het onder­zoek tij­dens Dhondt’s resi­den­tie wordt in het najaar van 2025 gepre­sen­teerd in M.

Ellen Dhondt will be a guest at the M‑residency in Cas-co for five months. Fascinated by the design of edu­ca­ti­o­nal works­heets and their invi­si­ble dog­ma­tic impact on ima­ge for­ma­ti­on, she explo­res gen­der roles, ste­reo­ty­ping and the con­struc­ti­on of iden­ti­ty in her pain­tings.

In a spon­ta­neous, see­min­gly inno­cent visu­al lan­gu­a­ge, Dhondt cre­a­tes a pic­to­ri­al world that allows her to foreground the often bana­li­sed expe­rien­ces of women. Inspired by the cut-out paper dolls from the 1920s, she cre­a­ted an alter ego: Ellie Dolly. This charac­ter is per­for­med in various situ­a­ti­ons and envi­ron­ments, in which Dhondt explo­res the com­plex fema­le iden­ti­ty, uni­ver­sal the­mes and taboos.

The result of the research during Dhondt’s resi­d­en­cy will be pre­sen­ted in M​in the autumn of 2025.
