Denys Shantar neemt deel aan Monster School in Middelheim
Het collectief Monsters Assembly is een initiatief van artistiek onderzoekers Helga Baert en Gosie Vervloessem (wpZimmer). Aan de basis ligt de artistieke praktijk van Leonardo Delogu (verkenning van de mobiele ruimte) en Carolina Mendonça (overdracht van kennis). Zij vormen samen met tien andere deelnemers, waaronder onze huidige artist-in-residence, de Monsters School die zich deze zomer vestigt in het Middellheimmuseum.
Samen vormen alle aanwezigen een ‘monsterlijk’ wezen: iets/iemand die voorbijgaat aan ‘de norm’, een ‘meer dan menselijk’ wezen. Tegelijk kan zo’n monsterlijke zijnsvorm in Monsters Assembly één individu overstijgen, en muteren naar of verbinden met iets of iemand anders.In de Monsters School wisselen de deelnemers binnen een schoolse structuur hun expertises uit om te leren van elkaar. Ze onderzoeken nieuwe, lichamelijker dynamieken die de klassieke verhoudingen tussen leraar en leerling vervangen, zoals siësta-leessessies of yogalessen.
Als schoolgebouw gebruiken de deelnemers de Franchise Unit van Atelier Van Lieshout. De Nederlandse kunstenaar Joep van Lieshout maakte dit paviljoen voor het Middelheimmuseum als gemeenschappelijke ruimte, potentieel voor de opstart van een nieuwe vrijstaat.
De deelnemers aan de Monster School organiseren elke zaterdag in de maand juli een picknick-performance, en daarvoor ben ook jij van harte uitgenodigd. Je krijgt er de kans om ervaringen en eten te delen.

The Monsters Assembly collective is an initiative of artistic researchers Helga Baert and Gosie Vervloessem (wpZimmer). The basis is the artistic practice of Leonardo Delogu (exploration of mobile space) and Carolina Mendonça (transfer of knowledge). Together with ten other participants, including our current artist-in-residence, they form the Monsters School, which will be located in the Middellheim Museum this summer.
Together, all those present form a ‘monstrous’ being: something/someone who goes beyond ‘the norm’, a ‘more than human’ being. At the same time, such a monstrous form of being in Monsters Assembly can transcend one individual, and mutate into or connect with something or someone else. In the Monsters School, participants exchange their expertise within a school structure to learn from each other. They explore new, more physical dynamics that replace classic teacher-student relationships, such as siesta reading sessions or yoga classes.
The participants use the Franchise Unit of Atelier Van Lieshout as a school building. The Dutch artist Joep van Lieshout created this pavilion for the Middelheim Museum as a communal space, potentially for the start of a new free state.
The participants in the Monster School organize a picnic performance every Saturday in July, and you are also cordially invited. You get the chance to share experiences and food.
