Na bij­na vijf jaar geeft Mirthe Demaerel in juli 2025 de fak­kel door als alge­meen coör­di­na­tor van Cas-co vzw. Onder haar lei­ding groei­de de orga­ni­sa­tie uit tot een soli­de en zicht­ba­re spe­ler bin­nen het Vlaamse kun­sten­land­schap en ver­an­ker­de zich die­per in Leuven en ver daar­bui­ten. Cas-co kon­digt nu met trots de aan­stel­ling aan van Zuzanna Rachowska als nieu­we coör­di­na­tor, een stap rich­ting een toe­komst waar­in de rol van kun­ste­naars als motor voor maat­schap­pe­lij­ke ver­beel­ding cen­traal staat. 

Vijf jaar ver­ster­king, ver­nieu­wing en ver­an­ke­ring
Toen Mirthe Demaerel in 2020 aan­trad, for­mu­leer­de ze een hel­de­re ambi­tie: Cas-co ste­vi­ger wor­te­len en tege­lijk hoger laten groei­en. En dat gebeur­de. Ze bouw­de brug­gen naar beleids­ma­kers, part­ners en col­le­ga-orga­ni­sa­ties in bin­nen- en bui­ten­land. De wer­king werd ver­breed met extra ate­lier- en resi­den­tie­plek­ken, een gra­fisch lab en een kun­ste­naars­keu­ken. Ook inhou­de­lijk kreeg het onder­steu­nings­pro­gram­ma een ste­vi­ge impuls met nieu­we for­mats en samen­wer­kin­gen. Vandaag telt Cas-co zo’n 30 ate­liers, vijf resi­den­tie­plek­ken en een dyna­mi­sche com­mu­ni­ty. Cas-co staat meer dan ooit bekend als een open, soli­dai­re werk­plek voor beel­den­de kun­ste­naars en per­for­mers, met een ster­ke focus op artis­tie­ke uit­wis­se­ling, col­lec­tie­ve ont­wik­ke­ling en duur­za­me samen­wer­kin­gen. Recent vier­de Cas-co haar 10-jarig bestaan, een sym­bo­lisch moment dat samen­viel met de aan­kon­di­ging van deze nieu­we overgang. 

Nieuwe coör­di­na­tor, gedeel­de visie
Vanaf juli 2025 neemt Zuzanna Rachowska de rol van alge­meen coör­di­na­tor op. Ze brengt een scherp inzicht in de heden­daag­se kunst­prak­tijk en rui­me erva­ring in cura­tie en pro­duc­tie, onder meer bij Kunsthal Extra City en M HKA. In haar visie bena­drukt ze het belang van trans­pa­ran­tie, duur­za­me rela­ties en artis­tie­ke autonomie.

“Ik voel een ster­ke ver­ant­woor­de­lijk­heid om voort te bou­wen op het werk van mijn voor­gan­ger. Cas-co is voor mij in de eer­ste plaats een plek die kun­ste­naars onder­steunt in hun prak­tijk én ont­wik­ke­ling, met zorg, ruim­te en kan­sen,” aldus Rachowska. ​“Ik wil bij­dra­gen aan een orga­ni­sa­tie die recht­vaar­di­ge kan­sen biedt, pro­fes­si­o­neel werkt én artis­tiek durft te experimenteren.”

Een belang­rij­ke ambi­tie van Rachowska is het ver­ze­ke­ren van struc­tu­re­le en sta­bie­le finan­cie­ring voor Cas-co en haar team. Daarnaast wil ze het loka­le ver­an­ke­ren com­bi­ne­ren met inter­na­ti­o­na­le uit­wis­se­ling: ​“Cas-co is ste­vig gewor­teld in Leuven, maar kan tege­lijk een rol­mo­del zijn bin­nen een inter­na­ti­o­naal net­werk van kun­ste­naars­plek­ken die wer­ken van­uit ver­trou­wen, samen­wer­king en duurzaamheid.”

De orga­ni­sa­tie dankt Mirthe Demaerel voor haar tome­lo­ze inzet en visie, en kijkt met veel ver­trou­wen uit naar het nieu­we hoofd­stuk onder lei­ding van Zuzanna Rachowska.

After near­ly five years, Mirthe Demaerel will pass the torch as General Coordinator of Cas-co vzw in July 2025. Under her lea­der­ship, the orga­ni­sa­ti­on grew into a solid and visi­ble play­er in the Flemish arts lands­ca­pe, whi­le dee­pe­ning its roots in Leuven and beyond. Cas-co is now proud to announ­ce the appoint­ment of Zuzanna Rachowska as its new coo­r­di­na­tor — mar­king a new chap­ter in which the role of artists as dri­vers of soci­al ima­gi­na­ti­on will take cen­tre stage.

Five years of rein­for­ce­ment, rene­wal, and rootedness

When Mirthe Demaerel began her role in 2020, she set out a clear ambi­ti­on: to streng­then Cas-co’s foun­da­ti­ons whi­le expan­ding its reach. That visi­on came to life. She built strong brid­ges with poli­cy­ma­kers, part­ners, and peer orga­ni­sa­ti­ons both locally and inter­na­ti­o­nal­ly. Cas-co’s ope­ra­ti­ons broa­de­ned with new stu­dio and resi­d­en­cy spa­ces, a grap­hic lab, and a sha­red kit­chen for artists. Its sup­port pro­gram­me was also enri­ched through new for­mats and collaborations.

Today, Cas-co offers around 30 stu­dios, five resi­den­cies, and hosts a dyna­mic artis­tic com­mu­ni­ty. It is wide­ly recog­ni­sed as an open, col­la­bo­ra­ti­ve workspa­ce for visu­al artists and per­for­mers, with a strong focus on artis­tic exchan­ge, col­lec­ti­ve devel­op­ment, and sustai­na­ble part­ner­ships. Recently, Cas-co cele­bra­ted its 10^th anni­vers­a­ry — a sym­bo­lic miles­to­ne that coin­ci­ded with the announ­ce­ment of this new transition.

New coo­r­di­na­tor, sha­red vision

From July 2025, Zuzanna Rachowska will take up the role of General Coordinator. She brings with her a sharp under­stan­ding of con­tem­po­ra­ry artis­tic prac­ti­ces and exten­si­ve expe­rien­ce in cura­ti­on and pro­duc­ti­on, inclu­ding posi­ti­ons at Kunsthal Extra City and M HKA. Her visi­on is groun­ded in transpa­ren­cy, sustai­na­ble rela­ti­ons­hips, and artis­tic autonomy.

“I feel a strong res­pon­si­bi­li­ty to build on the work of my pre­de­ces­sor. For me, Cas-co is first and fore­most a pla­ce that sup­ports artists in both their prac­ti­ce and devel­op­ment — with care, spa­ce, and oppor­tu­ni­ty,” says Rachowska. ​“I want to help sha­pe an orga­ni­sa­ti­on that offers fair oppor­tu­ni­ties, ope­ra­tes pro­fes­si­o­nal­ly, and embra­ces artis­tic experimentation.”

One of Rachowska’s key ambi­ti­ons is to secu­re struc­tu­ral and sta­ble fun­ding for Cas-co and its team. She also aims to com­bi­ne strong local groun­ding with inter­na­ti­o­nal exchan­ge: ​“Cas-co is dee­ply root­ed in Leuven, yet has the poten­ti­al to ser­ve as a role model within an inter­na­ti­o­nal net­work of artist-led spa­ces based on trust, col­la­bo­ra­ti­on, and sustainability.” 

Cas-co extends heart­felt thanks to Mirthe Demaerel for her unwa­ve­ring dedi­ca­ti­on and visi­on, and looks ahead with gre­at con­fi­den­ce to this new chap­ter under the lea­der­ship of Zuzanna Rachowska.
