Dependant is het onder­zoek van Elke Cuppens, Senneke Van de Wygaert en AfT/​Milan Gillard naar de rela­ties tus­sen tafe­len, juweel­kunst en taal. De betrok­ken kun­ste­naars orga­ni­se­ren diver­se artis­tie­ke en edu­ca­tie­ve bij­een­kom­sten in samen­wer­king met Cas-co en maak­leer­plek. Aan het ein­de van de resi­den­tie wor­den de onder­zoeks­re­sul­ta­ten ont­slo­ten tij­dens het Dependant fes­ti­val (2−3 juli).

Senneke Van de Wygaert: Senneke zoekt bin­nen haar stu­die Juwelenontwerp en goud­smeed­kunst aan PXL-MAD School of Arts zoveel moge­lijk de gren­zen op van de heden­daag­se juwe­len­kunst. Door ver­schil­len­de ​‘tools’ te ont­wer­pen en work­shops te orga­ni­se­ren, wil ze onder­zoe­ken hoe ze de juwe­len­kunst­sec­tor, dik­wijls geï­so­leerd van ande­re dis­ci­pli­nes, kan open­bre­ken en bui­ten­staan­ders kan uit­no­di­gen om er deel van uit te maken. Naast het par­ti­ci­pa­tie­ve speelt ook het per­for­ma­tie­ve een rol in het werk van Senneke en ziet zij ziet het werk­pro­ces als gelijk­waar­dig aan het eind­re­sul­taat.

AfT/​Milan Gillard: AfT is een aca­de­mie met een noma­di­sche en kri­ti­sche bena­de­ring van ​‘the Wrongs’ van van­daag. Elke nieu­we situ­a­tie of omge­ving heeft zijn eigen con­text en biedt ver­schil­len­de onder­wer­pen die aan de orde kun­nen komen. Soms dra­gen spe­ci­fie­ke con­tex­ten oplos­sin­gen in zich, maar kan deze enkel bereikt of gevon­den wor­den via (goe­de) com­mu­ni­ca­tie. Dit is pre­cies waar AfT wil ope­re­ren: com­mu­ni­ca­tie­ve brug­gen bou­wen tus­sen ver­schil­len­de personen/​situaties/​locaties.

Elke Cuppens: door hap­pe­nings en par­ti­ci­pa­tie­ve instal­la­ties te ont­wer­pen, laat Elke men­sen in inter­ac­tie met elkaar gaan en zo nieu­we rela­ties aan­gaan. Deze infor­me­le eve­ne­men­ten zijn vaak gekop­peld aan het con­cept van ​‘tafe­len’, waar con­ver­sa­tie van groot belang is. Elke pro­beert dit gesprek sub­tiel te stu­ren door ener­zijds de titel van het pro­ject, maar voor­al ook door de acties die de instal­la­tie uit­lokt. De gemeen­schap­pe­lij­ke daad die de deel­ne­mers moe­ten onder­gaan, roept vra­gen op over onze afhan­ke­lijk­heid en het samenleven.

Dependant is the research of Elke Cuppens, Senneke Van de Wygaert and AfT/​Milan Gillard into the rela­ti­ons­hips bet­ween dining, jewelery and lan­gu­a­ge. The artists invol­ved orga­ni­ze various artis­tic and edu­ca­ti­o­nal mee­tings in col­la­bo­ra­ti­on with Cas-co and maak­leer­plek. At the end of the resi­d­en­cy, the research results will be made avai­la­ble through the Dependant fes­ti­val (2−3 July).

Senneke Van de Wygaert: within her stu­dy of Jewelry Design and Goldsmith’s Art at PXL-MAD School of Arts, Senneke explo­res the boun­da­ries of con­tem­po­ra­ry jewel­ry art as much as pos­si­ble. By desig­ning various ​‘tools’ and orga­ni­zing work­shops, she wants to inves­ti­ga­te how she can open up the seclu­si­on of the jewel­ry art sec­tor and invi­te out­si­ders to be part of it. In addi­ti­on to the par­ti­ci­pa­ti­ve, the per­for­ma­ti­ve also often plays a role in Senneke’s work and she sees her enti­re work pro­cess as an equal to her end result.

AfT/​Milan Gillard: AfT is an Academy with a noma­dic and cri­ti­cal appro­ach to ​“the Wrongs” of today. Each new situ­a­ti­on or sur­roun­ding has its own con­text and offers dif­fe­rent topics that can be addres­sed. Sometimes the­se spe­ci­fic loca­ti­ons car­ry the solu­ti­ons within them, but they are wai­ting to be pro­per­ly com­mu­ni­ca­ted. This is exact­ly whe­re AfT wants to ope­ra­te. We want to build com­mu­ni­ca­ti­ve brid­ges bet­ween the dif­fe­rent persons/​situations/​loca­ti­ons.

Elke Cuppens: by desig­ning hap­pe­nings in the form of par­ti­ci­pa­to­ry instal­la­ti­ons, Elke likes to get peo­p­le to inter­act with each other and thus esta­blish new rela­ti­ons­hips. These infor­mal hap­pe­nings are often lin­ked to dining, whe­re con­ver­sa­ti­on is of gre­at impor­tan­ce. She tries to subtly steer this con­ver­sa­ti­on through the name of the pro­ject on the one hand, but more impor­tant­ly through the acti­ons pro­vo­ked by the instal­la­ti­on. The com­mu­nal act that the par­ti­ci­pants must under­go pro­vo­kes ques­ti­ons about our depen­den­ce and living and learning together.
