Er is een procedure voor het vouwen en ontvouwen van de Petticoat Government vlag, zodat iedereen hem kan gebruiken, ongeacht het soort ceremonie.
De vlag bestaat uit een witte rechthoek en een dubbele westelijke voortzetting. De verhouding is die van de uiterste en middelste rede en een vouw in zeven gelijke delen beantwoordt aan een canon van harmonieuze verdeling. Een middenvouw parallel aan het hijsen van de vlag verdeelt de vlag in tweeën en bepaalt een punt op de bovenrand van de gulp. Vanaf dit punt sluit een diagonale vouw aan op de rechterbenedenhoek van de rechthoek. Het snijpunt met de hoofddiagonaal, tegenover de hele vlag, gerelateerd aan de bovenrand van de gulp, bepaalt een derde van de lengte van de vlag door een nieuwe vouw, nog steeds parallel. Vanaf dit punt wordt een nieuwe diagonaal naar de hoek getrokken, en het snijpunt ervan met de hoofddiagonaal bepaalt het kwart van de vlag volgens hetzelfde principe. Drie opeenvolgende vouwcombinaties geven de vijfde, zesde en uiteindelijk zevende lengte van de vlag. De afmeting van deze vouw wordt overgebracht op het hele oppervlak om het in zeven te verdelen in de richting van lengte en hoogte.
Dit hijsen van de vlag is de aanleiding voor het project Petticoat Government dat na Leuven naar de Alpen wordt verplaatst om op 9 maart de status van tafelkleed aan te nemen voor een feestelijke picknick aan het Resia-meer, alvorens als gordijn te worden opgehangen in het Belgisch Paviljoen tijdens de 60e Kunstbiënnale van Venetië in 2024. De lengte van de vlag komt overeen met de maximale grootte om de school niet te raken, en de breedte met de geschikte hoogte voor een zijkamer in het paviljoen.

Het collectief Denicolai & Provoost * Antoinette Jattiot * Nord * Spec uloos, een kruisbestuiving tussen kunst, curatorschap, architectuur, typografie en cartografie, is door de Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles aangesteld voor de Biënnale van Venetië in 2024. Het project‘Petticoat government’ gaat aan de slag met een pan-Europese mythische figuur: de reus. Het collectief voert bestaande reuzen op uit zowel het noorden (België, Noord-Frankrijk) als Zuid-Europa (Catalonië, Zuid-Italië). Het paviljoen wordt opgevat als een‘lieu de passage’, een tijdelijke rustplaats. De reis van de reuzen bestaat uit drie étappes: het oversteken van de Alpen, het verblijf in Venetië en de terugkeer naar het Noorden. Tijdens een epische, feestelijke tocht doorkruisen en overschouwen de reuzen verschillende lokale contexten en lanceren al doende vragen rond culturele identiteit en gemeenschap.

There is a procedure for folding and unfolding the Petticoat Government flag, so that anyone can use it whatever the type of ceremony.
The flag is made up of a white rectangle and a double western continuation. The proportion is said to be of the extreme and middle reason and a fold in seven equal parts responds to a canon of harmonious division. A median fold parallel to the flag’s hoist divides it in two and determines a point on the upper edge of its fly. From this point, a diagonal fold joins the bottom right-hand corner of the rectangle. Its intersection with the master diagonal, opposite the whole flag, related to the upper edge of the fly, determines a third of the flag’s length by a new fold, still parallel. From this point a new diagonal is drawn towards the corner, and its intersection with the master diagonal determines the quarter of the flag by the same principle. Three successive fold combinations give the fifth, sixth and finally seventh length of the flag. The measurement given by this fold is transferred to the entire surface to divide it into seven in the direction of length and height.
This flag-raising is the trigger for the Petticoat Government project which, after Leuven, is moved to the Alps to take on the status of a tablecloth for a festive picnic on Lake Resia on 9 March, before being hung as a curtain in the Belgian Pavilion during the 60th Venice Art Biennale in 2024. The length of the flag corresponds to the maximum size that avoids hitting the school, and the width to the appropriate height for a side room in the Pavilion.

The collective Denicolai Provoost * Antoinette Jattiot * Nord * Spec uloos, cross-mixing art, curatorial practice, architecture, typography and cartography, has been appointed by the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles for the 2024 Venice Biennale. The‘Petticoat government’ project tackles a pan-European mythical figure: the giant. The collective performs existing giants from both northern (Belgium, northern France) and southern Europe (Catalonia, southern Italy). The pavilion is interpreted as a‘lieu de passage’, a temporary resting place. The giants’ journey consists of three stages: crossing the Alps, staying in Venice and returning north. During an epic, festive journey, the giants traverse and oversee different local contexts and in the process raise questions of cultural identity and community.
