Het vlaggenproject:

Off the Grid, het presentatieplatform van Cas-co, en 019 co-programmeren een vlaggenmast op de speelplaats van Brede School Stroom. Deze mast van 20 meter vormt een permanente tentoonstellingsruimte in de openbare ruimte: elk jaar worden vier vlaggen van 36 to 54m² ontworpen door kunstenaars die verbonden zijn met de Leuvense scene of Cas-community. Het project sluit zo aan bij de snel veranderende omgeving van de Vaartkom met al zijn industrieel erfgoed en nieuwbouwprojecten.

The flag project:

Off the Grid, the presentation platform of Cas-co, and 019 are co-programming a flagpole on the playground of Brede School Stroom. This 20-meter pole forms a permanent exhibition space in the public space: every year, four flags of 36 to 54m² are designed by artists who are connected to the Leuven scene or Cas community. The project thus ties in with the rapidly changing environment of the Vaartkom with all its industrial heritage and new construction projects.

Flag / Vlag #12: 'A Long and Uncertain Path' - Stans Vrijsen & Sofia Boubolis

Rouge Royal is een artistiek duo bestaande uit Stans Vrijsen (1995, België) en Sofia Boubolis (1981, België). Tijdens hun Off the Grid-residentie bij Cas-co in het voorjaar van 2026 verkende Rouge Royal de collecties en depots in Leuven. Hun onderzoek leidde hen naar de archeologische collectie van KU Leuven, waar ze een afgietsel van een 14^e-eeuwse liturgische kam ontdekten.

De kam heeft twee zijden, die nu in twee verschillende collecties worden bewaard: de ene in KU Leuven en de andere in Musée L in Louvain-la-Neuve. Op basis van het afgietsel dat ze in Leuven vonden, creëerde Rouge Royal een monumentale frottage op de muren van Cas-co.

Rouge Royal verplaatst de geschiedenis van deze kam naar de openbare ruimte, waar die verschijnt als een figuur in de lucht. Losgemaakt van een muur die inmiddels onzichtbaar is geworden, transformeert de frottage een fragment van de geschiedenis in een embleem. Door zijn afwezigheid brengt het Leuven en Louvain-la-Neuve in dialoog.

De inauguratie zal plaatsvinden op woensdag 23 september bij Cas-co en start om 18:30.

Rouge Royal is an artistic duo formed by Stans Vrijsen (1995, Belgium) and Sofia Boubolis (1981, Belgium). During their Off the Grid residency at Cas-co in the spring of 2026, Rouge Royal explored the collections and depots in Leuven. Their research led them to the archaeological collection of KU Leuven, where they discovered a cast of a 14^th-century liturgical comb.

The comb consists of two sides, now held in two different collections: one in KU Leuven and the other at Musée L in Louvain-la-Neuve. Based on the cast they found in Leuven, Rouge Royal created a monumental frottage on the walls of Cas-co.

Rouge Royal displaces the history of this comb into public space, where it appears as a figure in the sky. Detached from a wall that has since become invisible, the frottage transforms a fragment of history into an emblem. Through its absent side, it brings Leuven and Louvain-la-Neuve into dialogue.

The inauguration will take place on Wednesday, September 23 at Cas-co, starting at 6:30 PM.
