In Ívar Glói Gunnarson Breiðfjörð’s object orien­ted appro­ach to sculp­tu­re, each work takes on a dif­fe­rent role as an actor, props, or gestu­re that form alli­an­ces with each other, ema­na­ting an infor­ma­ti­on net­work with its own self con­tai­ned logic. As all gene­ral pla­ces have clear con­no­ta­ti­ons as to their func­ti­on and iden­ti­ty, fil­led with agents that make up the logic of what the pla­ce is, an art exhi­bi­ti­on has the advan­ta­ge of not having clear inten­ti­on. Thus, it can resist any pre­con­cei­ved expecta­ti­on an art vie­wer might have as well as any form of sin­ce­re gestu­re. How fic­ti­o­nal or arti­fi­ci­al are our sur­roun­dings, and, any­way, do we even mind that? Probably not.

In 2023, Ívar was awar­ded the CAS-CO BAC award. The pri­ze is gran­ted eve­ry year to a pro­mi­s­ing young artist from LUCA School of Arts. The win­ner recei­ves, among other things, a resi­d­en­cy in BAC ART LAB and Cas-co, as well as finan­ci­al support.

In Ívar Glói’s object­ge­rich­te bena­de­ring van sculp­tuur neemt elk werk een ande­re rol op — als acteur, rekwi­siet of gebaar — en vormt een alli­an­tie met elkaar. Zijn instal­la­ties stra­len een infor­ma­tie­net­werk uit met een eigen open, op zich­zelf staan­de asso­ci­a­tie­ve logi­ca. Tijdens zijn vier maan­den duren­de resi­den­tie­pe­ri­o­de bestu­deer­de Ívar visu­e­le ele­men­ten uit archi­tec­tuur, toneel­ont­werp, café­cul­tuur en cul­tu­reel toe­ris­me. Voor zijn ten­toon­stel­ling in Cas-co com­bi­neer­de hij motie­ven met betrek­king tot spek­ta­kel, slaap, open­ba­re ruim­te en de wil­der­nis om ​“een soort gedempt spek­ta­kel” te pre­sen­te­ren.

Ívar Gloí (geb. 1992) is een IJslandse kun­ste­naar die in Brussel woont. In 2023, na zijn afstu­de­ren aan de LUCA School of Arts, ont­ving hij de CAS-CO BAC award, een geza­men­lij­ke prijs die elk jaar wordt uit- gereikt aan een veel­be­lo­ven­de jon­ge kun­ste­naar van LUCA. De win­naar ont­vangt onder ande­re een resi­den­tie in BAC ART LAB en Cas-co, even­als finan­ci­ë­le onder­steu­ning.
