'God save the Queers' - Denys Shantar

Denys Shantar is de huidige artist-in-residence bij Cas-co. In zijn werk maakt hij vaak gebruik van zijn herinneringen en familiegeschiedenis, waarbij hij verschillende materialen en technieken gebruikt om verhalen te creëren die het midden houden tussen werkelijkheid en fictie. In zijn onderzoek naar kindertijd, religie, migratie en queerness koppelt hij het persoonlijke aan actuele, mondiale maar ook historische gebeurtenissen en verweeft hij symbolen uit de mythologie, kunstgeschiedenis, folklore en het christendom. Denys gebruikt voornamelijk gerecyclede, geschonken of gevonden stoffen en materialen, vaak met inbegrip van religieuze iconografie.
Zijn residentie van drie maanden zal uitmonden in een presentatie en een openbaar programma getiteld God save the Queers in Cas-co tussen 12 en 22 september.
Terwijl hij zijn complexe identiteit en relatie tot zichzelf, de wereld en zijn familie onderzoekt, stelt hij twee eenvoudige maar gelaagde vragen: “Wie ben ik?” en ‘Waar kom ik vandaan?’. Sinds zijn studie Costume Design is hij zich gaan richten op het gebruik van textiel, borduurwerk en collages in zijn werk. Tijdens zijn residentie heeft Denys zowel on- als offline religieuze iconografie, verhalen en efemerea verzameld als inspiratiebronnen.
Denys interesse komt voort uit het verhaal van Sint Gall en Sint Jan de Rus. Door deze schijnbaar willekeurige heiligen te combineren, wil hij zijn eigen iconografie creëren en een persoonlijk queer immigratieverhaal vertellen. De inspiratie komt van een oude traditie die familie-iconen wordt genoemd, een afbeelding van de beschermheilige van de pasgetrouwden. In Denys werk is het “meer een huwelijk van twee verschillende aspecten/tegenpolen van mezelf”.
Tijdens zijn residentie verbleef Denys in Villa Stuyven, waar hij tijdens Open Monumentendag een atelierbezoek en presentatie over zijn praktijk organiseerde. Hij heeft onder andere een religieuze kringloopwinkel in Nederland bezocht.
Denys was onlangs ook curator van de tentoonstelling CROSS-ING WAY‑S in het Museum voor Moderne Religieuze Kunst in de Basiliek van Koekelberg. De tentoonstelling sloot aan bij zijn persoonlijke interesses, nieuwsgierigheid en kennis in het herformuleren van de kruisweg, ook bekend als de Wegen van Smarten, in vijftien staties — inclusief de onofficiële verrijzenis van Jezus. De tentoonstelling bood ook een hedendaagse kijk op de invasie van Oekraïne door werken uit verschillende collecties in België en Nederland samen te brengen en hedendaagse kunstenaars als Elena Subach en Lina Van Hulle uit te nodigen.
Tijdens de opening van zijn presentatie op 12 september zal Denys om 19:00 uur deelnemen aan Let’s Talk Leuven, waarbij hij zijn praktijk zal voorstellen aan het publiek in combinatie met een vraag en antwoord.

Denys Shantar is the current artist-in-residence at Cas-co. His practice often uses his memories and family history, deploying different materials and techniques to create narratives laying between reality and fiction. In his research about childhood, religion, migration, and queerness, he links the personal to current global but also historical events, weaving in symbols from mythology, art history, folklore and Christianity. Denys uses predominantly recycled, gifted, or found fabric and materials, often including religious iconography.
His three month residency period will culminate in a presentation and public programme titled God save the Queers unfolding at Cas-co between the 12th and 22nd of September.
While exploring his complex identity and relationship towards himself, the world and his family, he asks two simple yet layered questions: ‘Who am I?’ and ‘Where do I come from?’. Since his Costume Design studies, he started to focus on the use of textile, embroidery and collaging in his work. During his residency, Denys has collected and gathered, both on and offline religious iconography, stories and ephemera as sources of inspiration.
Denys interest originates from the story of St. Gall and St. John the Russian. By combining these seemingly random saints, he aims at creating his own iconography and tell a personal queer story of immigration. The inspiration comes from an old tradition called family icons, a depiction of the patron saint of the newlywed. In Denys work it’s « more a wedding of two different aspects/opposites of myself ».
During his residency, Denys has stayed at Villa Stuyven, where he has organised a studio visit and presentation over his practice during Open Monumentendag. Among others he has visited a religious kringloopwinkel in The Netherlands.
Denys has also recently curated the exhibition CROSS-ING WAY‑S at the Museum of Modern Religious Art at the Basilica of Koekelberg. The exhibition tied in with his personal interests, curiosity and knowledge in reformulating the Way of the Cross, also known as the Ways of Sorrows into fifteen Stations – including the unofficial resurrection of Jesus. The exhibition also offered contemporary readings on the invasion of Ukraine, by assembling works from different collections across Belgium and The Netherlands, as well as inviting contemporary artists such as Elena Subach and Lina Van Hulle.
During the opening of his presentation on September 12th, Denys will take part in Let’s Talk Leuven, at 19:00, introducing his practice to the public accompanied by a Q&A.
