Alessandro Bava is an architect based in Naples, Italy. I research and write about the poetics and politics producing contemporary space.
Currently he is leading a research cluster on computational architecture at UCL Bartlett School of Architecture in London, and a course on exhibition design at Istituto Europeo di Design in Rome.

In voorjaar 2019 lanceerde Cas-co een oproep voor een scenografie voor een nieuwe off-space in Leuven. Uit meer dan 20 inzendingen selecteerde een jury van experten en kunstenaars het ontwerp van Alessandro Bava, een architect en schrijver die woont en werkt in Londen en Napels.
Zijn ontwerp Hard and Soft verwijst naar 2 in elkaar doorlopende ruimtes (the Hard & the Soft Room) die door hun contrast en wisselwerking plaats bieden aan zeer uiteenlopende projecten.
In the Hard Room, de centrale ruimte van Cas-co, wordt een nieuwe constructie (the Soft Room) gebouwd, opgetrokken uit witte betonblokken en binnenin bekleed met tapijt. De eenvoudige rechthoekige ruimte in een ruimte met huiselijke materialen zoals tapijt en zitbank, in relatie tot de grotere industriële ruimte, kan zowel ingezet als formele presentatiesetting als plek voor informele samenkomsten en productie.
Dit eerste scenografische ontwerp Hard & Soft zal de uitvalsbasis zijn voor jonge, experimentele en kwaliteitsvolle makers om zelf programma te maken in, rondom en buiten deze ruimte.
De eerste programmagroep bestaat uit kunstenaars Ash Bowland, Bram Van Breda en Cédric Urbanski die vanaf oktober 2019 een en beeldende kunstenprogramma met tentoonstellingen, in situ producties, performance-avonden en interventies in de openbare ruimte.
Hard & Soft is een ontwerp van Alessandro Bava dat tot stand komt in samenwerking met A402, een praktijkstudio in Napels van architecten, stedelijke ontwerpers, onderzoekers, curatoren en schrijvers.

In Spring 2019 Cas-co launched an open call for a scenography for a new off-space in Leuven. From more than 20 proposals, a jury of experts and artists selected the design of Alessandro Bavo, an architect/writer based in London and Naples. Bava has made exhibitions internationally as curator/artist/architect in institutions including the Ludwig Museum in Cologne, Fondation Cartier (Paris), the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam) and the Serpentine Galleries (London).
Hard and Soft. Inspired by the idea that an exhibition space is not just a white cube where objects are displayed, Alessandro Bava proposes a spatial design which he describes as an instrument and platform for the interaction between artists.
In the Hard Room, the main industrial space of Cas-co, a new construction, as a room within the room, will be built. This Soft room is made of regular concrete white bricks and lined internally with fiber mat. The simple rectangular space in a space has a quasi domestic materiality with her carpet walls and a bench around its perimeter. Both Hard & Soft Room can be used for a more formal program of exhibitions and events but also constitute a shared living space for the artists where they can eat and have informal talks.
The first scenography for Off the, grid will be the starting point for artists to present a visual arts program within and outside this space. It will host exhibitions, in situ productions, performance evenings and interventions in public space.
The first group of artists are Ash Bowland, Bram Van Breda and Cédric Urbanski who will present a program starting from October 19.
