M Leuven: Casas Muertas - Angyvir Padilla

Het toonmoment van Angyvir Padilla vormt het sluitstuk van haar vijf maanden durende residentie. Geïnspireerd door de ervaring van ontheemding en de Venezolaanse diaspora, onderzoekt Padilla de noties tijd, herinnering en thuis. In haar multidisciplinaire praktijk vloeien sculptuur, beeld, geluid en performance naadloos in elkaar over.
Angyvir Padilla’s persoonlijk fotoarchief met beelden uit Venezuela vormt de basis voor een nieuwe reeks werken, waarin ze herinneringen aan thuis vertaalt naar sculpturale installaties en performance. Terwijl ze de langeafstandsrelatie met familie en dierbare plekken uit haar kindertijd verkent, verdiept ze zich in de emoties die aan de ervaring van migratie verbonden zijn.
Gefascineerd door het concept van ‘ontworteling’, onderzoekt Padilla de symbolische en rituele betekenis van bloemen en planten in huiselijke omgevingen in verschillende culturele contexten. Daarbij legt ze verbanden tussen de Venezolaanse huizen en tuinen uit haar herinneringen – in het bijzonder die van haar grootmoeder – en deze in België.
M presenteert het resultaat van Padilla’s residentie van 11 oktober tot 5 januari 2025 in het museum.
Samenwerking met Moussem
De residentie van Angyvir Padilla is een samenwerking met Moussem, een Brussels kunstencentrum dat werkt op ontwikkeling, productie en presentatie van beeldende kunsten en podiumkunsten. Moussem en M breiden hun residentiewerking uit door een wisselwerking tussen de twee residentieplekken (Brussel en Leuven) te organiseren.

Angyvir Padilla’s show moment marks the culmination of her five-month residency. Inspired by the experience of displacement and the Venezuelan diaspora, Padilla explores notions of time, memory and home. In her multidisciplinary practice, sculpture, image, sound and performance flow together seamlessly.
Angyvir Padilla’s personal photo archive of images from Venezuela forms the basis for a new series of works, in which she translates memories of home into sculptural installations and performance. While exploring the long-distance relationship with family and treasured places from her childhood, she delves into the emotions attached to the experience of migration.
Fascinated by the concept of ‘uprooting’, Padilla explores the symbolic and ritual significance of flowers and plants in domestic settings in different cultural contexts. In doing so, she makes connections between the Venezuelan houses and gardens from her memories — especially those of her grandmother — and those in Belgium.
M presents the result of Padilla’s residency at the museum from 11 October to 5 January 2025.
Collaboration with Moussem
Angyvir Padilla’s residency is a collaboration with Moussem, a Brussels arts centre working on development, production and presentation of visual and performing arts. Moussem and M are expanding their residency collaboration through an interaction between the two residency sites (Brussels and Leuven).
