5.10 - 31.12: 'No, no! Only as fast as possible without stress' - Jan Duerinck (Art au Centre)
On 5 October, Art au Centre will be inaugurating the 13th edition of Art au centre in Liège. 25 empty shop windows will be filled with artistic installations, amongst them ‘No, no! Only as fast as possible without stress’ by Vaartstraat resident Jan Duerinck.
‘No, no! Only as fast as possible without stress’ plays on the conventional distinctions between art and utility. It features a hanging lamp, seemingly hand-drawn but computer-aided, casting light on its own fabricated elements. Paired with a non-functional bench held together by knee mats and F‑clamps, it challenges the concept of comfort and transience. The enigmatic title, derived from a text message, prompts reflection on the elusive nature of rest in current times. Two paintings of a wing mirror without reflection evoke the absence of looking back, focusing on the mirror as an object. This mirror symbolizes safety and control, probing the viewer’s role as a motorist, highlighting themes central to the artist’s work. ‘No, no! Only as fast as possible without stress’ beckons you to contemplate the paradoxes of comfort, the impermanence of rest, and power dynamics ingrained in the fabric of our modern world.
Op 5 oktober huldigt Art au Centre de 13e editie van Art au centre in Luik in. Vijfentwintig lege etalages werden gevuld met evenveel kunstinstallaties, waaronder ‘Nee, nee! Gewoon zo snel mogelijk zonder stress’ door Vaartstraat-resident Jan Duerinck.
‘Nee nee! Gewoon zo snel mogelijk zonder stress’ speelt in op het conventionele onderscheid tussen kunst en nut. De presentatie bestaat uit een hanglamp, schijnbaar met de hand getekend maar computergegenereerd, die licht werpt op de eigen vervaardigde elementen. In combinatie met een niet-functionele bank die bij elkaar wordt gehouden door kniematten en F‑klemmen, daagt de lamp het concept van comfort en vergankelijkheid uit. De raadselachtige titel, ontleend aan een sms-bericht, zet aan tot nadenken over het ongrijpbare karakter van rust in de huidige tijd. Twee schilderijen van een buitenspiegel zonder reflectie roepen de afwezigheid van achterom kijken op, waarbij de spiegel als object centraal staat. Deze spiegel symboliseert veiligheid en controle, probeert de rol van de kijker als automobilist uit en benadrukt thema’s die centraal staanin het werk van de kunstenaar. ‘Nee nee! Alleen zo snel mogelijk zonder stress’ nodigt uit tot nadenken over de paradoxen van comfort, de vergankelijkheid van rust en de machtsdynamieken die ingebakken zitten in de structuur van onze moderne wereld.
